It sends the firmware update packages (upacks) for further processing by the HSM. The upacks are digitally signed and encrypted by Dinamo Networks, and contain a small unencrypted descriptive header, which is displayed to the user purely as information. Submitting an upack to the HSM does not necessarily mean that it will be accepted and incorporated into the firmware. First, the upack will be decrypted and its integrity and authorship verified; any failure in this process, such as a tampered upack, for example, will cause the process to be aborted and the upack not accepted by the HSM. Once the integrity and authorship of the upack have been verified, the HSM will still analyze it to check that it is addressed to the HSM version and other checks, and only then will it be used to update the HSM firmware.
The update process takes place in two stages:
- The upack is submitted to the HSM via the remote console;
- On the local console the HSM service should be stopped and a reboot requested; if the upack has been submitted successfully, before the reboot the HSM will inform the user that an upack is pending awaiting processing, displaying descriptive information from the upack header. If the user confirms the update, the upack will be processed immediately by the HSM. Depending on the processing result, four situations can occur: success with or without reboot and error with or without HSM reboot. In either case, the result can be retrieved from the HSM logs.
Firmware updates should only be carried out on the recommendation of your supplier.
